Family Camping Guide

Camping with a family is no small task, but in return for the work and preparation, we’re able to detach from our work, phones, and everyday distractions. Time outside places us in the moment, creating space for new connections, special memories, and shared experiences. If you’re starting out on your family camping journey, find some suggestions for essential gear and considerations for your setup.

Choose Your Shelter

When we reflect on the camping trips of our youth, most of us have at least one story that includes inclement weather, a leaky or cramped tent, and general unhappiness. While we’re not bold enough to claim our tents and shelters remove all discomfort, we can confidently say they offer an unparalleled experience and will offer elevated comfort regardless of the weather.

Alpha Breeze: One of our most quintessential best-sellers, the Alpha Breeze is popular for a reason. Parents appreciate its four entry points, which make it possible to slip in and out without awakening young sleeping campers. Its front panel extends for a covered porch area or can zip down into a standard vestibule. Last but not least, its A-frame structure offers ample headroom that allows most adults to stand fully upright. No hunching! The Alpha Breeze is a 3-season tent that sleeps up to four.

Land Nest Shelter: A newer addition to our lineup, the Land Nest Shelter offers a simple structure designed for those newer to camping (or in a rush to complete setup). The inner tent offers a private space for sleeping, while still leaving ample space to gather within an enclosed space. Lounge inside and keep bugs away with mesh paneling or enjoy wind protection by zipping up all the panels. The Land Nest Shelter is a three-season shelter that sleeps up to four.

Land Lock: When you’re ready to dial the comfort to another level, the Land Lock Shelter should be your first stop. The shelter offers a spacious interior gathering area for games or cooking. The private inner tent offers space for sleeping, while the dual expandable shade panels add even more living space. The Land Lock has mud/snow flats around its base, making it a reliable four-season shelter for four to six campers.

If none of these feels quite right for your family, there’s more to explore! Take a look at our full collection of tents and shelters to find your perfect match.

Build Your Bedroom

Besides a reliable tent or shelter, a good night’s sleep is another way to guarantee a good time for all. Our suggestion? Go overboard to create a cozy and comfortable space to rest. For smaller families, consider adding cots to increase storage space. It may seem counter-intuitive, but an elevated bed makes it easy to shove bags and other gear out of the way. Inflatable mattresses are a must – both for insulation from the ground or cold air, and for the added cushioning. Try the Inflatable Mattress or Slim Mat Plus  or the mat/comforter combo, the Ofuton Mat Plus.

Now for the accessories! Think about warm lighting from our popular Hozuki and Mini Hozuki Lanterns. Both lights are dimmable and rechargeable. The addition of a small bedside table or extra storage can bring a feeling of completeness to the space.

Create Your Kitchen

Keep your campers fed! It all starts with a functional and well-designed kitchen. Snow Peak’s Iron Grill Table system offers an expandable and customizable cooking and dining space. Choose from a pre-set bundle like the IGT Camp Kitchen Starter Set or build your setup from scratch. Pair your IGT kitchen with the Single Action Table and Mesh Folding Chairs to give your group space to share a tasty meal.

Another consideration is your site's organization. At Snow Peak, we think one of the keys to a restorative outdoor experience is a tidy camp. This may be an unrealistic goal when you have young campers, but the Tabletop Architect System is a great place to start! Use pieces like the TTA Side Tray and Clamp Tool to create additional storage and organizational space for utensils.

Create A Campfire Gathering

Moments around the campfire – what we like to call Takibi Time – bring us together in a special way. Create a cozy hangout for s’more roasting, storytelling, and simple lounging. A Takibi Fire & Grill set is a must-have for your campsite. Its folding structure makes packing a breeze, and the adjustable grill bridge and grill net allow for easy campfire cooking. Pair it with the Jikaro Firering Table and some Low Beach Chairs for a complete gathering setup.

If you’re worried about inclement weather, our fire-resistant tarps are a must-have.  The Takibi Tarp Hexa Set comfortably fits up to six campers, while the Hexa Evo Pro and its Takibi Inner Roof offer additional space for up to eight.

Once you have these essentials in place, it’s time to consider the finishing details. The best-selling Folding Torch combats even the dampest firewood. Its powerful flame will impress new and seasoned campers alike. Bring some stylish details to the campsite with the fire-resistant Takibi apparel line, or build out your campfire kitchen with cast iron cookware and durable utensils.
